Denne depression i skoven er forårsaget af sandudvinding. Det brusselanske sand blottlægges her og er meget velegnet til byggeri. Det gav altså i fortiden anledning til sandudvinding, så indbyggerne i den nærliggende sogn Essenbeek sandsynligvis ikke blot blev kaldt Zavelkoppen (Van Schepdael et al. 2003). Sandet indeholder desuden jernholdige mineraler, som blev udnyttet ved jernudvinding (f.eks. limonit). Derudover findes der også kalksandstenbanker i denne tertiære aflejring. Hvor erosion havde lidt indflydelse, er det brusselanske stadig dækket af et lag af kvartær eolisk ler (loess).
