Navnene 'Fortstreet' og 'Vestingstreet' henviser til et fort, bygget på ordre af den spanske general Monterey (1675). Omgivet af mure på seks meter tykke og syv meter høje lå der en kaserne, et fængsel og magasin. Det militære bastion skulle beskytte den strategisk svage sydside af Bruxelles mod fjendtlige angreb. Det tvang blandt andet Ludvig XIVs tropper til i 1695 at beskyde byen fra den fjernere og lavere beliggende Scheuthelling. De sidste rester af fortet forsvandt i 1862. Kun gadenavnene er blevet tilbage.
