Adolphe Sax blev født i 1814 i Dinant. Som søn af en instrumentbygger begyndte han i en ung alder en musikuddannelse i Bruxelles. Hans yndlingsinstrument var klarinetten, men Sax begyndte snart at eksperimentere og forsøgte at udvikle nye instrumenter. I 1835 præsenterede han en kompleks basklarinet, og i 1841 kom han med en saxofon på den Bruxelles industrielle udstilling. I Belgien fik han dog ikke den nødvendige anerkendelse, og han grundlagde en instrumentfabrik i Paris, som voksede til en virksomhed med mere end 200 ansatte.
