I centrum af Herne tiltrækker kirkens tårn, bygget af massive stenblokke, opmærksomhed. Det er Sankt Peter og Pauls Kirke. Den nuværende bygning har et midterkors og skib i romansk stil, samt et kor og tårn udført i Brabantisk Scheldegotik. Typisk for denne stil er de fire hjørnetårne omkring spidsen. Bemærkelsesværdigt er kommunens alder: Herne nævnes første gang som 'Herinium' i 844 og betyder muligvis 'boplads ved stenen'.
