I slutningen af 1990 blev Nationalpark Hochharz i Sachsen-Anhalt indviet. I starten af 1994 fulgte det nærliggende Niedersachsen med Nationalpark Harz. Sammen udgør de 21.700 hektar af intakt natur og skovareal, som kun her og der forstyrres af uudslettelige spor fra tusind års intensiv minedrift.
