Byen Rendsburg ligger i midten af Schleswig-Holstein ved Nord-Ostsee-Kanalen og den historiske Ochsenweg. Den forbinder de to landsdele Schleswig og Holstein, idet den gamle by historisk set ligger på en werder ved grænselandet Eider. Mellembyn er stærkt præget af sin historiske funktion som den sydlige grænserfestning af det danske rige og som garnisonsby/militærsted. I dag er den sæde for kredsadministrationen i kredsen Rendsburg-Eckernförde.
