Kreiensen ligger i Sydniedersachsen i Leinebergland og tilhører Harz- og Sollingforlandet. Den ligger mellem bjergkæderne Helleberg mod nord, Hube i vest-sydvest og Selter mod nordvest. Gande, en nordøstlig biflod til Leine, flyder gennem Kreiensens bykerne, med Leineauene ved Kreiensen.<brGamle betegnelser for stedet er omkring 1342 Creyenhusen, 1344 Cregenhusen, før 1362 Kreyensen, 1394 Bertolt von Kregensen, 1408 Kregensen, omkring 1440 Kregenszen og i 1441 Kreyensen.
