Werden er i dag en bydel i den sydlige del af byen Essen. Som tidligere selvstændig abbedi-by har Werden stadig en historisk gammel bydel og mange bygningsminder. Bydelen præges af løse boligbyggerier med handel og erhverv samt områder til nærområdets rekreation i Ruhrdalen. Historisk set lå Werden, sammen med Kettwig og Mülheim an der Ruhr, ved den nordlige grænse af det bergiske land.
