Da navnet på bydelen oprindeligt henviser til den geografiske betegnelse for stedet, her: Horst, bor man ikke i Uhlenhorst, men på Uhlenhorst.
Uhlenhorst ligger øst for Außenalster mellem udløbene af Osterbek og Eilbek. Det grænser op til bydelene Winterhude, Barmbek-Syd, Eilbek og Hohenfelde. Den sydlige bygrænse udgøres af Eilbekkanalen, som løber ud i Kuhmühlenteich og endelig gennem Mundsburger Kanal i Außenalster. Mod nord strækker Uhlenhorst sig til Osterbekkanal, som løber ind i Außenalster som Langer Zug. Østgrænsen for bydelen er gaderne Herderstraße/Winterhuder Weg, Oberaltenallee og Richardstraße. I sydenden af bydelen, mellem St.-Gertrud-Kirken og Kuhmühlenteich, siges den geografiske midtpunkt for byen Hamburg at ligge.
