Lichtenau ligger i den sydlige del af naturparken Teutoburger Wald/Eggegebirge. Den største del af byområdet tilhører Paderborns højland, med den nordlige del af byen, Soratfeld, og den østlige udkant til Eggegebirge. Den gennemstrømmes af Altenau-bissen Sauer.
