Vandet fra floden Gutach falder her over en højde på 163 meter fra 872 meter til 711 meter over havets overflade. Den øvre del af vandfaldet er mindre spektakulær. Her findes et lille vandkraftværk. Gutach kaster sig fra en skrånende plateau over mere end 7 store trin ind i den klippeformede V-formede dal i Triberg. Den dybe dal udvider sig her lidt, så der er plads til landsbyen Triberg. De stejle klippevægge og vandfaldene er dannet af to brud i granitten og derefter af gletsjere i Pleistocæn.
