Restauranten ligger i Carrer Montsió, nummer 3 bis, i stueetagen af Casa Martí, en modernistisk bygning designet af arkitekten Josep Puig i Cadafalch i 1896.
Els Quatre Gats, på dansk De fire katte, blev grundlagt efter forbillede af Le Chat Noir af Aristide Bruant i Paris. Det var et fællesforetagende af fire venner, der havde tilbragt en tid sammen i Paris. De var tre kunstnere, Ramon Casas i Carbó, Santiago Rusiñol, Miquel Utrillo i Morlius, og Pere Romeu i Borràs, som havde arbejdet som tjener i Le Chat Noir. Navnet Els Quatre Gats henviser til de fire grundlæggere, til Le Chat Noir, men kan også stå for en håndfuld mennesker, et mindretal.
