Fou kendt som Portus Victoriae af romerne. Fejrede i 2006 300-års jubilæet for den officielle titel som by. Den har en havn med betydelig godstrafik, hvor skibet Cabo Machichaco eksploderede den 3. november 1893. Det var den mest alvorlige civile tragedie, der fandt sted i Spanien i det 19. århundrede. Den har også en lufthavn med regelmæssige lavpris internationale forbindelser, Universitetet Menéndez Pelayo. En stor brand, der begyndte den 15. februar 1941, ødelagde praktisk taget den gamle bykerne, og derfor skiller især Palácio de la Magdalena, katedralen, bygningerne langs Pereda-maritimstrækningen og Banco Santanders hovedsæde sig ud i dag.
