Det spektakulære landskab i Las Médulas er et resultat af Ruina Montium, en romersk minedrifteteknik beskrevet af Plinius den Ældre, som består af at bore ind i bjerget og lade store mængder vand løbe igennem, hvilket bogstaveligt talt fik bjerget til at kollapse.
