Byen og slottet er bygget på en trekantet bjergtop ved sammenløbet af floderne Eresma og Clamores.
Byggeri begyndte i det 11. århundrede under kong Alfonso VI på et sted, hvor der allerede stod en træstruktur. Slottet gennemgik mindst tyve ombygninger, hvoraf de i det 15. århundrede var betydelige. En af ombygningerne blev ledet af Francisco De Mora. I det 19. århundrede blev slottet restaureret efter en brand. Det indeholder blandt andet en tronhal og et skatkammer.
