I juli 1794 var Hôtel de ville scenen for vold. Efter en terrorperiode ledet af Robespierre forsøgte modstandere at tage magten. Bange for at blive fanget forsøgte den berømte franske revolutionær Maximilien Robespierre at begå selvmord med en pistol, men lykkedes kun med at knuse sin kæbe. Andre, såsom hans bror Augustin, sprang ud af vinduet på Hôtel de ville. De tog Robespierre med den knuste kæbe for at blive henrettet. Han blev tilbageholdt i det samme containmentrum, hvor Marie Antoinette, hustruen til Kong Louis XVI, var blevet tilbageholdt, før hendes henrettelse. Den 28. juli 1794 blev Robespierre guillotineret uden rettergang på Place de la Révolution.
