Slaget ved Verdun var en af de blodigste kampe i historien om Første Verdenskrig. Den dag i dag står den som et symbol på den meningsløse slagting af menneskeliv.
Verdun havde en stor symbolsk betydning for det franske folk. Allerede i oldtiden spillede byen, på grund af sin strategiske beliggenhed ved Maas, en vigtig rolle i forsvaret af det omgivende land. Attila den Hun har aldrig kunne indtage byen. Ved opdelingen af Karl den Stores rige i 843 blev det i Verdun-traktaten fastslået, at byen blev en del af det Hellige Romerske Rige. Ved Freden i Münster i 1648 blev Verdun endeligt tildelt Frankrig.
