Abbey St. Augustin i Canterbury blev grundlagt i 597 eller kort efter af Augustin af Canterbury og er dermed det første kloster i det sydlige England og den første grundlæggelse af benediktinerne uden for Kontinentaleuropa. Siden 1988 har abbeyen sammen med katedralen og St. Martin's Kirke i Canterbury været en del af UNESCO's verdensarv.
Augustin var munk i benediktinerklosteret St. Andreas på Caelius-højen i Rom, som blev grundlagt af Gregor I få år før hans valg til pave. Dog er der, som David Knowles påpeger, nogle berettigede tvivl om, at St. Andreas strengt overholdt Benedikts regel, da det på det tidspunkt var ganske almindeligt at supplere denne regel med egne tilføjelser, der for eksempel lagde større vægt på liturgien.
