I 1336 blev en ung pige, der blev indlagt på hospitalet i S. Donnino eller S. Lorenzo, mirakuløst helbredt fra en langvarig sygdom ved den hellige jomfru Marias forbøn. Efter miraklet blev sygesalen omdannet til et oratorium; men i det 15. århundrede blev der bygget en ny kirke på stedet, som er viet til S. Maria delle Grazie, også kendt som "sengekirken", fordi sengen til den mirakuløse pige er bevaret.
