Den brugske lærde og opfinder Simon Stevin udførte sine berømte faldprøver på tårnet i Delft i det 16. århundrede. Allerede i den græske tid var Aristoteles overbevist om, at tungere bolde falder hurtigere end lettere. Simon Stevin viste med sine prøver, at dette ikke var tilfældet. Han lod to blybolde falde fra 10 meters højde, hvoraf den ene vejede 10 gange mere end den anden. De ramte jorden samtidig. Dette eksperiment skulle af Galilei senere udføres ved det berømte tårn i Pisa. Galilei blev berømt for det. Få ved, at det tidligere blev udført af Simon Stevin.
