Navnet Bronkhorst blev første gang nævnt omkring år 1000, da en efterkommer af Bruncharus, den første greve af Hameland, siges at have grundlagt en bosættelse med dette navn. Siden 1482 har Bronkhorst haft byrettigheder.
Byen er planlagt anlagt foden af slottet til herrerne af Bronckhorst. Blandt de vigtigste bevarede antikviteter er kapellet og et par huse med trapegavle samt nogle boliger med træværk i ydermurene. Slottet, bymuren og byens kanaler er forsvundet.
