BBC Travel har udvalgt Giethoorn som en af de 6 smukkeste kanalsbyer i verden. Denne lille by uden for Amsterdam blev udviklet i moseområder. Løsningen fra 1200-tallets tørvegravere var at grave kanaler for at transportere deres varer. Giethoorn har stadig 6,4 km vandveje, gennemskåret af mere end 150 træbroer, med frodige forhaven, huse med stråtag helt ned til vandkanten. Vejene strækker sig ikke til den centrale gamle by. De 2.500 indbyggere bevæger sig normalt fra det ene sted til det andet via punter.
