Byen Zwartemeer blev grundlagt i 1871 syd for det forsvundne Sorte Hav. Det drejede sig om en ca. 100 hektar stor ankerlade, der dannede udspring for åen Runde. Det blev drænet og forsvandt under udtørringen af moserne. Tørvemoset var en del af den store Boertanger-sump.
