Slottet stammer oprindeligt fra det trettende århundrede. Det første slot blev ødelagt i det sekstende århundrede og genopbygget i 1594. I 1634 blev det dengang ubeboede hus ofret til en bande eventyrere ledet af Theodoor Cauwenberg, som gjorde området utrygt. Tropper fra Liège og Aachen belejrede derefter slottet og nedrev det. I 1833 blev resterne skåret ned til en platform, hvorpå man byggede det nuværende slot. I 1880 blev slottet udvidet.
