For at kontrollere handelen på den vigtige Hudson-flod, byggede West Indies Company eller WIC opkaldte kaldet New Amsterdam her. Men kolonien blev truet af indianere og angrebet af briterne. WIC byggede en mur her for at forsvare sig. Den mur er navnet på en af de mest berømte gader i verden: Wall Street. Muren er markeret på kortet fra Jacques Cortelyou, generalguvernør for New Amsterdam på det tidspunkt.
