Gurk ist eine Marktgemeinde Kärntens mit 1199 Einwohnern im Bezirk Sankt Veit an der Glan. Überregionale Bedeutung hatte der Ort als Bischofssitz der Diözese Gurk und durch den romanischen Gurker Dom von 1140, der auf eine Stiftung der Landesherrin Hemma von Gurk zurückgeht.Der Markt Gurk ist von Bergwiesen und ausgedehnten Hochwäldern umgeben und stellt ein Zentrum des wenig besiedelten Gurktals dar. Flussabwärts der Gurk liegt die Kleinstadt Straßburg, von deren Festung einst die Gurker Fürstbischöfe regierten.
