Die Tauernbahn verläuft zwischen Schwarzach-St. Veit im Bundesland Salzburg und Spittal-Millstättersee in Kärnten. Sie ist Bestandteil einer der wichtigsten Nord-Süd-Magistralen Europas und dient auch der touristischen Erschließung des Gasteinertals.Diese klassische Gebirgsbahn ist 79 km lang und überwindet die Hohen Tauern mit einer maximalen Streckenneigung von 25 Promille. Der Gebirgskamm wird im 8371 Meter langen Tauerntunnel durchquert.
