Dank einer genialen Konstruktion können die Schiffe eine Höhe von 68 Metern auf dem Kanal überwinden. Sie fahren in großen Barken von 91 Metern Länge, die mit Wasser gefüllt sind. Diese werden über eine Distanz von 1400 Metern gezogen und gelangen anschließend in einen anderen Abschnitt des Kanals, wo sie ihre Reise fortsetzen können. Auf dem höchsten Punkt befindet sich ein 150 m hoher Turm, der den Maschinenraum beherbergt. Der Turm kann besichtigt werden und bietet eine spektakuläre Aussicht.
