Die Schiffshebewerk von Strépy-Thieu ist eine Perle der Technologie, industrielle Archäologie und Architektur.
Es fehlte nicht viel und diese Perle wäre in den 60er Jahren abgerissen worden. Die alten Hebewerke und dieser Teil des Kanals sind jetzt glücklicherweise ein geschütztes Denkmal und wurden am 2. Dezember 1998 von der UNESCO als Weltkulturerbe anerkannt.
