Bis 1926 lebten im Millionärsviertel nur arme Bauern, die ihre Ernte an die Stadtbewohner verkauften. In dieser Zeit war die Industrie noch sehr präsent in der Stadt, und die Stadt als Wohnort war gelinde gesagt nicht ideal. Daher zogen die wohlhabenden Menschen aus der Stadt weg und begannen, nach der Entwicklung weiterer Wohngebiete zu suchen, wie dem Miljoenenkwartier.
Im Jahr 1913 wurde ein Teil dieses Gebiets für die Weltausstellung genutzt. Der Architekt für die Gebäude der Weltausstellung war Oscar Vande Voorde. Der aktuelle Straßenplan des Miljoenenkwartiers basiert auf diesem Grundriss.
Das Gebiet wurde schließlich 1926 parzelliert.
Zwischen 1927 und 1939 wurden in rasantem Tempo 252 Wohnungen gebaut, wobei 126 Architekten beitrugen. Viele dieser Architekten waren vor den Gewalttaten des Ersten Weltkriegs ins Ausland gegangen und hatten dort viel Inspiration gesammelt. Das Miljoenenkwartier ist jetzt eine geschützte städtische Landschaft.
