Auch wenn Aywaille nicht groß ist, leben dort mehr als achttausend Menschen, und es erfüllt dadurch eine zentrale Funktion für die Region. Es ist auch ein wichtiger Verkehrsknotenpunkt: Aywaille wird manchmal als das Tor zu den Lütticher Ardennen bezeichnet. Ganz in der Nähe kämpften Österreicher und Franzosen 1794 in einer ihrer Schlachten auf dem Höhenzug Sur La Reid oder Heid des Gattes, das heute ein Naturschutzgebiet ist.
