Im Jahr 1994 wurde das 2. Regiment Gidsen, ein Leopard - Panzerbataillon aus Altenrath in Deutschland, zusammen mit vielen anderen Einheiten aufgelöst. Dabei stellte sich das Problem, das reiche Erbe dieses ruhmreichen Kavallerieregiments, das 1874 gegründet wurde, zu bewahren. Die Gemeinde Zelzate bewirbt sich darum, diesem Erbe ein Zuhause zu geben. Die Gemeinde war dem Regiment nämlich dankbar für die großen Opfer, die die Einheit bei der Verteidigung von Zelzate während des achttägigen Feldzugs im Mai 1940 gebracht hatte. Das Museum zollt in drei Ausstellungsräumen auf angemessene Weise dem reichen Erbe des Regiments Tribut.
