Nivelles ist eine Stadt der Provinz Wallonisch-Brabant in der Region Wallonien in Belgien und Sitz des Arrondissements Nivelles. Sie hat 28.883 Einwohner und eine Fläche von 60,56 km².Im Jahr 640 wurde von Itta, der Ehefrau Pippins des Älteren, im Gebiet der heutigen Stadt das Kloster Nivelles gegründet; um dieses Kloster ist eine Siedlung entstanden. Nach dem Tod von Gertrudis, der ersten Äbtissin und Tochter Ittas, der Gründerin des Klosters, im Jahre 659 wurde sie zum Wallfahrtsort.
