Letterhoutem ist ein Dorf in der belgischen Provinz Ostflandern und ein Teilgemeinde der Gemeinde Sint-Lievens-Houtem. Es hat eine Fläche von 4,59 km² und zählt 1224 Einwohner. Der Ort liegt in der Denderregion. 1140 wurde der Ort als Holthem erwähnt. "Hout" steht für Wald und "hem" für Wohnort oder Erbe. Letterhoutem war also ein Wohnort am Wald. Später findet man den Namen als Lettelhoutem, was "kleines Houtem" bedeutet. In lateinischen Urkunden wurde das Dorf als Parvo Houthem erwähnt, wobei parvus ein lateinisches Wort für klein ist. Aus dem Jahr 1336 stammt Littelhouthem. Später begegnet man wieder den Formen Lettelhoutem und letztendlich Letterhoutem.
