Der Ort geht auf die 1120 gegründete Benediktinerabtei Kloster Engelberg zurück und ist eine Exklave des Kantons Obwalden, umgeben von den Kantonen Bern, Nidwalden und Uri. Engelberg ist ein Ort des Sommer- und Wintertourismus.
Engelberg liegt 25 km südlich des Vierwaldstättersees und 20 km südlich des Dorfes Stans, in einem flachen, weiten Hochtal auf rund 1000 m Höhe. Der Ort ist eingeschlossen zwischen dem Gebirgsmassiv des 3238 m hohen Titlis im Süden und einer Bergkette im Norden, die von den bis zu rund 2800 m hohen Bergen Engelberger Rotstock, Ruchstock, Rigidalstock und den Walenstöcken gebildet wird. Im Osten beherrscht der unmittelbar über dem Ort thronende Hahnen mit 2600 m Höhe das Ortsbild.
