Der Kanton Schwyz ist ein Kanton in der Deutschschweiz und zählt zur Grossregion Zentralschweiz sowie zur Metropolregion Zürich. Der Hauptort ist die gleichnamige Gemeinde Schwyz, der einwohnerstärkste Ort ist Freienbach.
Da der Kanton Schwyz der wichtigste der drei Schweizer Urkantone war, wurde sein Name bald auf die gesamte Eidgenossenschaft verallgemeinert. Die ins Neuhochdeutsche übertragene Form Schweiz wurde in der Folge im gesamten deutschen Sprachraum als Bezeichnung des Staates üblich; die einheimische Form wurde hingegen als Suisse ins Französische übernommen. Die Schwyzer- und die Schweizerfahne sind dagegen unabhängig voneinander entstanden.
