Zur Zeit von Karl dem Grossen wurde die Ortschaft Gretzenbach das erste Mal schriftlich erwähnt. Der Name wird im Testament von Bischof Remigius von Strassburg, welches auf den 15. März 778 datiert ist, erwähnt. Zudem wurde 1912 bei den Überresten des Römischen Hauses eine Münze mit dem Bild des Kaisers Augustus und Hadrian gefunden. Der Ortsname Gretzenbach stammt ursprünglich aus dem keltischen .
Das heutige Gretzenbach beinhaltet das alte Gretzenbach und den Ortsteil Weid im hinteren Teil des Strassendorfes, welcher auch die noch heutigen Schulanlagen des Dorfes beherbergt. Das ursprüngliche Gretzenbach besass früher kein richtiges eigenes Schulhaus, Weid hingegen schon.
