Albula/Alvra entstand am 1. Januar 2015 aus der Fusion der bis dahin selbständigen Gemeinden Alvaneu, Alvaschein, Brienz/Brinzauls, Mon, Stierva, Surava und Tiefencastel. Die sieben Gemeinden stimmten am 28. Februar 2014 dem Fusionsvertrag zu.
Die Gemeinde liegt im Albulatal. Die Ortschaften liegen mit Ausnahme von Mon und Stierva im Talgrund an der Kantonsstrasse, die von der Schinschlucht nach Alvaschein kommt und von Alvaneu aus nach Bergün und Davos führt. Mon und Stierva liegen am nordöstlichen Abhang des Piz Curver. Bei Tiefencastel mündet die Julia in die Albula. Die Gemeindefläche erstreckt sich über 9363 Hektaren.
