Das Riesengebirge ist das höchste Gebirge Tschechiens und Schlesiens. Zentrale Bereiche des Gebirges liegen im 56 km² großen Karkonoski Park Narodowy .Das Riesengebirge erstreckt sich an der Grenze zwischen der polnischen Woiwodschaft Niederschlesien und Tschechien und erreicht auf der Schneekoppe eine Höhe von 1602 m. Das Gebirge hat subalpinen Charakter mit eiszeitlichen Gletscherkaren, Bergseen und den steilen felsigen Flanken der Berge. Nahe am Kamm, etwa 7,5 km nordwestlich des Zentrums von Špindlerův Mlýn , befindet sich in fast 1400 m Höhe die Quelle der Elbe.
