Die Gemeinde Burghaun liegt mit ihren Ortsteilen inmitten der hessischen Kuppenrhön, auch bekannt als das Hessische Kegelspiel – der nördlichste Teil der hessischen Rhön. Die neun Basaltkegel bilden aus der Luftperspektive betrachtet eine Rosettenformation, die mit der „Kegelkugel“ – dem Stoppelsberg – der Landschaftsformation ihren Namen gibt. Geologisch liegt Burghaun mit den umliegenden Gemeinden in einem urzeitlichen Binnenmeer, was bei vielen Wanderungen rings um Burghaun an verschiedenen Sediment-Formationen zu erkennen ist.
