Witsum liegt im Westen der Insel Föhr am Rande des sich grob am südlichen Inselufer entlangziehenden Geeststreifen oberhalb der Godelniederung.
Innerhalb des Gemeindegebiets befindet sich mit dem knapp elf Meter hohen Sylvert eine der höchstgelegenen Landstellen der Insel. Aus diesem Grund heißt es: Was der Mount Everest für die ganze Erde ist, das ist der Sylvert für unsere liebe Insel Föhr. Aufgrund seiner Lage sind von Witsum aus bei klarer Sicht die Halligen Langeneß und Hooge sowie die Insel Amrum zu sehen.
