Hohnstein ist eine Landstadt im Landkreis Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge in Sachsen. Die Stadt liegt rechtselbisch auf einer Hochfläche oberhalb des Polenztales.
Hohnstein und seine angegliederten Ortsteile liegen auf oder nördlich der Lausitzer Überschiebung, die die Grenze zwischen dem eigentlichen Elbsandsteingebirge und dem aus Granit aufgebauten Westlausitzer Berg- und Hügelland bildet, und somit am Rande des Nationalparks Sächsische Schweiz .
