Moringen liegt im Moringer Becken östlich des Höhenzugs Weper, an den sich westlich der Solling anschließt, und wird vom Oberlauf der Moore durchflossen, die einen westlichen Zufluss der Leine darstellt. Im Norden wird das Moringer Becken vom Höhenzug der Ahlsburg, einem Ausläufer des Solling, begrenzt.
Der Ort wurde im ersten Jahrtausend gegründet. Als Gau Morunga gehörte die Gegend südlich des Suilbergaus zum Leinegau. Im Hochmittelalter trafen hier die Interessen der Grafen von Dassel und der Herren von Rosdorf aufeinander. Die ältere bäuerliche Siedlung, das Oberdorf von Moringen, entstand um den „Opferteich“ und die aus dem 11. Jahrhundert stammende Martini-Kirche.
