Halsbrücke liegt 5 km nördlich von Freiberg, ca. 25 Kilometer von Dresden entfernt, auf dem linken Ufer der Freiberger Mulde, die hier eine größere Flussschleife beschreibt. Der Ort hat eine Nord-Süd-Ausdehnung von etwa einem Kilometer und eine Ost-West-Ausdehnung von etwa zwei Kilometern. Der tiefste Punkt liegt bei etwa 296 m ü. NN und der höchste Punkt bei etwa 375 m ü. NN.
Zum Ortsteil Halsbrücke der gleichnamigen Gemeinde gehören neben Halsbrücke die Gemeindeteile Hals und Neubau am linken Ufer der Freiberger Mulde, sowie Sand mit Grüneburg am rechten Ufer der Freiberger Mulde.
