Altenberg ist eine Stadt im sächsischen Landkreis Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge. Sie zählt zu den staatlich anerkannten Kurorten im Osterzgebirge. Die Stadt ist Sitz der Verwaltungsgemeinschaft Altenberg. Historisch war der Zinnerzbergbau über Jahrhunderte bedeutend.
Die Stadt Altenberg befindet sich im Osterzgebirge, ihr höchster Punkt ist der Kahleberg . Im Gemeindegebiet entspringt die Rote Weißeritz, einer der beiden Quellflüsse der Weißeritz. Während die Ortsteile Kipsdorf und Bärenstein im Weißeritztal beziehungsweise Müglitztal auf etwa 400 bis 500 m Höhe liegen, liegt der Ortsteil Falkenhain auf etwa 650 bis 700 m Höhe; der Ortsteil Zinnwald-Georgenfeld liegt auf über 800 m Höhe. Nördlich von Altenberg befindet sich die Wüstung Weigelswalde.
