Die Gemeinde Amtsberg liegt zwischen den Flüssen Zwönitz und Zschopau. Der höchste Punkt des Ortes ist die Dittersdorfer Höhe mit 553 m. Der Ortsteil Dittersdorf ist ein Waldhufendorf. Es liegt in einer Südwest-Nordost-Richtung vom Zwönitztal bis zur Dittersdorfer Höhe. Der Ortsteil Weißbach liegt südlich von Amtsberg in west-östlicher Richtung. Östlich von Weißbach befindet sich der Ortsteil Schlößchen, ein ehemaliges Vorwerk. Der Ortsteil Wilischthal am Zusammenfluss von Zschopau und Wilisch befindet sich südlich von Weißbach und Schlößchen.
Im Norden grenzt die Stadt Chemnitz mit den Ortsteilen Einsiedel und Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain an die Gemeinde, im Westen Burkhardtsdorf mit dem Ortsteil Kemtau, im Nordosten Gornau/Erzgeb., im Osten Zschopau im Süden Drebach mit dem Ortsteil Grießbach und im Südwesten Gelenau/Erzgeb.
