Weißenfels ist mit etwa 40.000 Einwohnern die bevölkerungsreichste Stadt im Burgenlandkreis in Sachsen-Anhalt. Zur Stadt Weißenfels gehören seit 2010 weitere elf Ortsteile, die bis dahin eigenständige Gemeinden waren.
Sie war Residenzstadt des Herzogtums Sachsen-Weißenfels, das von 1656 bis 1746 bestand. Von dieser Zeit und anderen Epochen künden das frühbarocke Schloss Neu-Augustusburg und weitere bedeutende Kulturdenkmale, vor allem in der Weißenfelser Kernstadt.
