Die Gemeinde Rühstädt liegt im nordwestlichen Brandenburg in der Prignitz, circa zwölf Kilometer südöstlich der Stadt Wittenberge, etwa zehn Kilometer von der Mündung der Havel in die Elbe entfernt. Das Dorf Rühstädt selbst hat circa 240 Einwohner. Die Gemeinde ist Teil des Amtes Bad Wilsnack/Weisen.
Der Name des Dorfes Rühstädt geht vermutlich auf das Wort Ruhestätte zurück und hängt damit zusammen, dass sich in der Krypta der Dorfkirche die letzte Ruhestätte der alten märkischen Ritterfamilie derer von Quitzow befindet, die im Spätmittelalter eine wichtige Rolle in der Geschichte der Mark Brandenburg spielte.
