Kettwig ist der flächenmäßig größte Stadtteil von Essen, gelegen im äußersten Südwesten und unmittelbar an der Ruhr. Er ist geprägt von teils dichter Wohnbebauung sowie Naherholungsgebieten unter anderem am Kettwiger See. Die Altstadt bildet das Zentrum. Historisch gehörte Kettwig, zusammen mit Werden und Mülheim an der Ruhr zu den nördlichsten Teilen des Herzogtums Berg, die gegenwärtig als Niederbergisches Land bezeichnet werden.
