Schmallenberg ist eine Mittelstadt im Hochsauerlandkreis. Mit 303 Quadratkilometern ist sie die flächengrößte kreisangehörige Stadt Nordrhein-Westfalens und eine der flächengrößten Städte Deutschlands.
Die Handelsstadt an der Lenne war im Mittelalter Mitglied der Hanse. Nachweislich gab es in der Kernstadt seit dem 15. Jahrhundert Textilgewerbe. Vierhundert Jahre später wurde die Stadt mit dem Produktionsschwerpunkt Strumpfwaren zum Zentrum der Sauerländer Textilindustrie. Dies brachte Schmallenberg den Beinamen Strumpfstadt ein. Heute dominieren neben der Textilindustrie auch mittelständische Unternehmen vor allem in Industrie und Handwerk. Eine wichtige Bedeutung haben aufgrund der wald- und bergreichen Lage auch die Holz- und die Tourismuswirtschaft.
